Fountain Valley Accident Claims Life of Teen Bicyclist Sean Severson

FOUNTAIN VALLEY (March 21, 2014) – A car versus bicycle accident has claimed the life of bicyclist Sean Severson Thursday morning.  According to reports, the accident took place on Bushard Street north of Warner Avenue minutes before noon time at 11:50 a.m.  A vehicle struck Sean Severson while he was riding a bicycle.  Severson was rushed to UCI Medical Center where he later died of his injuries the following day.  The driver of the Volvo which struck Severson remained at the scene.

Sean Severson was 15 years old, just days away from celebrating his 16th birthday.  He was a resident of Westminster.

There are no details yet as to the circumstances surrounding this fatal accident.  As information becomes available, we will update the story.  Witnesses should contact the Fountain Valley Police Department at (714) 593-4484 as they are the investigating agency.

UPDATE:  A fundraising effort is ongoing at to help the Severson family pay for expenses.

Sean is survived by his parents, David and Jenny Severson and siblings, Troy, Kathy and Jonathon.  Sean was a well liked and active student at Fountain Valley High School.  A vigil was held in honor of him on Tuesday at Huntington Beach’s Sun View Park where friends and family shared fond memories of Sean.  Also, a ghost bike has been erected in his honor near the accident scene.

Sean’s family now has a claim for wrongful death against the driver of the Volvo.  The driver’s insurance company will endeavor to defend him and claim that the driver was not at fault for the collision.  However, California is a comparative liability state, which means that percentages of liability must be assessed against each party in a collision.

    Volvo drivers are some of the worst. Hope they get charged with manslaughter…

  3. My daughter knew him from FVHS. He was taken far too young. Very sad, may he rest in peace. As drivers we all need to focus on the task of driving, and avoid distractions. Let's not let this ever happen again to anyone.
