THERMAL, RIVERSIDE COUNTY (February 8, 2014) – Bicyclist La Vonne Koester was killed on Saturday afternoon when a pick-up truck struck her while she was participating in the Tour de Palm Springs.
Koester was participating in the Tour de Palm Springs 100 mile ride at the time of the collision. She was struck by a 1999 Dodge pick-up truck around the 67th mile mark at the Harrison Street and 60th Avenue intersection. Koester was rushed to Indio’s John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital where she died soon-after arriving. La Vonne Koester was a resident of Alta Loma. The avid biker was 55 years old.
According to witnesses, the intersection is a two-way stop with stop signs on 60th Avenue. Investigators are talking to more witnesses and trying to figure out who had the right of way. The driver remained at the scene and its been stated that drugs or alcohol did not play a role in this accident. He had swerved to avoid hitting a car which had stopped to let the bikers pass and as a result, struck Koester.
