Long Beach – Sonia Esperanza Rodriguez, 54 year old mother, was killed in a car accident this morning only one day after celebrating Mother’s Day.
The accident happened at 9:13 a.m. in Long Beach at the busy intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Martin Luther King Avenue. The Chevy Blazer which Rodriguez was a passenger in was on the eastbound side of PCH making a left turn onto Martin Luther King Avenue when it hit a semi truck that was traveling in the opposite direction. Sadly, Esperanza and the driver of the Blazer were not wearing their seatbelts. The driver and Esperanza were both ejected from their car which is when Esperanza was fatally struck by the semi. A second passenger, a 21 year old male, who was in the backseat walked away with minor injuries.
The 29 year old Valencia resident who was driving the semi was questioned by police and released. The intersection was closed for most of the day for further investigation.
