Westminster – Pedestrian Shawn Keith was killed Wednesday evening after being struck by a pickup truck.
The accident happened in the 14100 block of Springdale Street between Ash Street and Mahogany Avenue in a mostly residential area. Keith was crossing the four lane highway around 10:30 p.m. when he was struck by a pickup truck. Paramedics rushed Keith to UCI Medical Center in Orange but did not survive his injuries. Keith was only 34 years old.
The driver of the pickup fled the scene. Witnesses should contact Westminster Police Department at (714) 898-3315. The driver of any car that causes injury to another person is obligated by law to stop at the scene. Fleeing the scene of an accident where somebody was killed can result in jail time in state prison and a fine. It is unclear if Keith was in a marked crosswalk at the time, however drivers should always look out for and yield to pedestrians.
UPDATE April 18, 7:38am - Police have identified Derek Wright, 45, as the driver of a Dodge Ram that struck pedestrian Shawn Keith two days ago.
Nearby witnesses performed CPR on Keith until paramedics arrived. Paramedics took Shawn Keith to the hospital.
Wright was described as a white male, about 6-foot-2 and 170 pounds. Police say Wright is a transient who is known in the area.
It is important to note that pedestrians have right of way, even when outside a crosswalk. If you have information about Wright’s location, please contact the Westminster Police Department at 714-898-3315 so he can be questioned.
