Pedestrian Marie Valenzuela Struck and Killed by Car in Indio

INDIO (October 2, 2013) – Pedestrian Marie Valenzuela was involved in fatal collision with a car early Tuesday evening.

Avenue 45 at Palo Verde Street intersection

Avenue 45 at Palo Verde Street intersection

The sedan struck Valenzuela as she was crossing the road while pushing a wheelchair at Avenue 45, east of Palo Verde Street around 6:00 p.m.  Valenzuela was rushed to John F. Kennedy Hospital in Indio where she later died of her injuries.  It is unknown if the driver of the sedan stayed at the scene as it is illegal to leave the scene of an accident.  Indio police are investigating what caused the accident.  The car that struck Valenzuela was a Chrysler Sebring driven by a male.  The intersection near where the accident took place is not marked, however pedestrians do have the right of way to cross at unmarked crosswalks if conditions are safe.

Marie Valenzuela was 72 years old, a resident of the city of Indio.  Our condolences go out to her family and friends in her untimely passing.  The individual in the wheelchair was not harmed.
