Pedestrian Leovigilda Ramirez Struck and Killed by Car

HESPERIA (July 20, 2013) – Pedestrian Leovigilda Ramirez received fatal injuries when she was struck by a car on Saturday while crossing the street. Ramirez was attempting to cross Third Avenue (3rd Avenue) near Smoketree Street when a sedan struck her.  The accident happened just minutes before 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.  Ramirez was transporte to Loma Linda University Medical Center via air ambulance but succumbed to her injuries on Sunday morning.  The Mecca resident was 46 years old.

It is unknown if the driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene to cooperate with local officials.  The area where the accident happened is pre-dominantly a residential neighborhood.

While its best to cross a street in a marked crosswalk, sometimes that is not possible.  It is legal for pedestrians to cross in unmarked crosswalks as long as they proceed with caution.  Drivers should always be aware of pedestrians and give them the right of way.
