Joshua Tree Accident Kills Passenger Angela Gail Matthews and Injures Marine Husband and Child

JOSHUA TREE (April 13, 2014) – A Sunday evening car collision fatally injures passenger Angela Gail Matthews and leaves her marine husband and one year old with serious injuries.

Matthews succumbed to her injuries sustained during the head-on collision on Tuesday, two days after the accident.  The accident took place on Sunday at 6:47 p.m. on State Highway 62 also known as Twentynine Palms Highway, west of Arizona Avenue.  According to reports, Christopher Matthews, the driver and husband, were eastbound on Highway 62 with his wife and one year old when the Mazda they were riding in was struck head-on.  Angela Matthews was rushed to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs where the 25 year old Twentynine Palms resident was pronounced a couple of days later.  Her husband and child’s condition are yet unknown.

The car that struck the Matthews family was driven by 22 year old Utah resident Jennifer Marie Zapata, who was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence.  Zapata was westbound on Highway 62 with a passenger, Evelyn Martinez, when she lost control of her Hyundai Sonata, and struck the Matthews family head-on.

This is such a tragic accident that could have been avoided if Zapata had avoided getting behind the wheel.  Angela’s husband and daughter will be able to file a wrongful death claim against the driver that struck them.  Our deep condolences go out to the Matthews family in the untimely death of a wife, mother and daughter, Angela Gail Matthews.
