SAN BERNARDINO – Davidalia “Jose” Landaverde, 58 years old, has died after the car which he was driving was struck by a police vehicle from the City of Fontana. Landaverde, his wife of many years and his mother-in-law were traveling westbound on Ceres Avenue when a police car, which may have been traveling either east or Northbound struck their car. The accident was so severe that investigators are not able to tell the direction in which the police car was traveling. A witness has indicated the police car was going north.
The Honda was so damaged that the three victims of the accident had to be extracted from the car. The collision occurred at night and it is not clear whether the police car had its headlights or emergency lights illuminated. Witnesses, including Sandra Aguilar, report that they did not hear a police siren or any braking. Police officers are known to frequently speed without sirens ringing. It is a very dangerous practice.
Landaverde’s wife said she had no memory of what caused the accident. His mother-in-law, Olga Mayorga, whos is 80 years old and lives in Guatemala, was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. Landaverde was taken to Fontana Kaiser Permanente where he was pronounced dead at 11:35 p.m.
The name of the officer who was involved has not been released.
