JURUPA VALLEY (October 12, 2013) – Three members of the Mendez family died on Saturday after being involved in a head-on auto accident. The collision occurred minutes before 10:00 p.m. at 10051 on Limonite Avenue east of Bain Street. Two cars collided head-on causing the car with 5 passengers to overturn.
The three fatalities were all in the overturned car which witnesses helped push back on its wheels. The three victims all perished at the scene. They have been identified as Norwalk residents 8 year old Elizabeth Mendez, 33 year old Elizabeth Mendez and 62 year old Maria Contreras De Mendez. According to police, the 8 year old girl and the elder Mendez were not wearing a seat belts at the time of the crash. Witnesses state the other two passengers were an elderly male and younger child, both rushed to a local hospital with major injuries but in stable condition.
The driver of the second vehicle remained at the scene. Police have not ruled out alcohol or drugs and an investigation is underway. The area where the crash occurred has seen many fatal accidents as drivers speed through the curvy decline of Limonite Avenue.
Our condolences go out to the Mendez family in this very tragic and untimely loss. If the driver that struck the Mendez car is found liable, the immediate family members of the victims will be able to file a wrongful death claim against the driver and the driver’s insurance.
