BURBANK (September 28, 2013) – A single vehicle crash on Saturday left five people fatally injured. The accident happened at 4:10 a.m. on the southbound side of San Fernando Road near the Scott Road off-ramp in Burbank. The driver of the Nissan sedan in which all the passengers were traveling, who may have been speeding, lost control of the car, struck a concrete structure and exploded into flames. An 18 year old girl, Savannah Underwood, was pulled from the car by a witness, she is expected to survive. The other five passengers were all fatally injured.
Three of the five victims were formally identified by coroner’s officials on Thursday: 23 year old Stephen Stoll of Burbank, 18 year old Sameer Joudeh Navarez of Valley Village, and 19 year old Malak Hariri. The other two victims identified by friends were Sebastian Forero and Sugey Cuevas. The victims were all recent graduates of Burbank High School and John Burroughs High Schools.
Our condolences go out to all the family and friends of the victims of this tragic accident.
Pursuant to California law, all the passengers have a cause of action for injuries and wrongful death against the driver. Unfortunately, just like so many accident cases in California, the driver may be woefully underinsured, which will under-compensate the families of the victims.
