LOS ANGELES (September 14, 2013) – Luis Garcia was fatally struck by car while he was riding his bicycle with a group of friends in the early morning hours of Saturday.
Garcia was riding with friends Ulises Melgar and Mario Lopez of Bellflower at the time of the accident which happened at 2:45 a.m. The trio were headed eastbound on Cesar Chavez Avenue when they were all struck from the back by a car driven by 21 year old Wendy Villegas. Villegas, who was driving a 2013 Toyota Corolla, fled the scene while the three friends were left on the road. Sadly, an approaching Nissan Quest minivan failed to see the bicyclists and struck Garcia. The driver of the Quest was identified as 21 year old Jimmy Marroquin.
Villegas turned herself into police only after going home and asking her parents to call for assistance. She admitted to be driving under the influence. She was legally bound to stay at the scene of the accident and render aid or wait for aid or at the very least prevent other motorists from striking the downed bicyclists. It is illegal to leave the scene of the accident. She was booked for driving under the influence, felony manslaughter and hit and run.
Garcia, a resident of Bellflower, was 21 years old. An avid wrestler and coach. Our condolences to the family and friends of Luis Garcia in his untimely and tragic death.
