CLAREMONT (December 27, 2013) – Bicyclist Ali Mirage was fatally struck by a car on Friday morning while riding his bike. The accident happened on the eastbound side of Baseline Road near Bonnie Brae Avenue around 10:00 a.m. Mirage was struck by a car also traveling in the eastbound direction, he was most probably struck from the back. According to early reports, Mirage was riding in a marked bike path at the time.
Ali Mirage was declared dead at the scene. The La Verne resident was 76 years old and an avid biker. Not many 76 year olds are avid bikers, which is an indication of Mirage’s health and likely longer life expectancy. A longer life expectancy results in a larger award because of the larger magnitude of the loss for Mirage’s family. Wrongful death damages in Riverside are calculated but the loss of love, comfort and companionship of the decedent for each year the decedent would have lived.
The 54 year old female driver of the car that struck Mirage remained at the scene. Charges have not yet been filed as an investigation is underway. Witnesses should immediately contact the Claremont Police Department at (909) 399-5411.
It is not clear what caused the collision, but California law recognizes that bicycles have all the same rights as vehicles. Vehicles must yield for cyclists. Many drivers actively look for other vehicles but neglect to look for cyclists.
